Helmut Newton Foundation
Performance is an independent art form and photography is its constant companion. The Helmut Netwon Foundation’s group exhibition »Body Performance« brings together – for the first time – photo sequences whose origins lie in performance art, dance and other staged events, complemented by paraphrased street photography and conceptual image sequences.
Bernd Uhlig has photographed the choreographic work of Sasha Waltz for many years. Her work is famously performed not only in conventional theatres – such as here in the Sophiensäle – but also in renowned museums in Berlin or Rome. In the case of Bernd Uhlig and Sasha Waltz, a genuinely fleeting art form and its visual materialisation find a harmonious connection in which the focus is on the concentration and dream/trance state of the performers. In both Uhlig’s photographs and Waltz’s performances, the leading role can be played either by architecture (as space or surface) or by the sensuality of the body.
